The Great Dane BARF Diet – Yumm
Great danes are not exactly know for their stellar health record, but this makes them no less lovable. They are still the best possible pets out there and I could not imagine owning any other type of dog. So, the question becomes what is the best way to keep my dane health? Of course there are many things that you can do, but I find the best one to be to feed your dog a healthy diet. For a great dane that can mean the BARF diet. Sounds delicious I know, so I will explain. The BARF diet stands for bones and raw food. And since dogs can’t cook, this means yes, raw meat.
Let me explain the basics. Dogs in the wild ate raw meat that they hunted down. So, a diet of dry dog food is probably not really optimal for our dogs, especial consider that the first ingredient on many types of dog food is some type of corn filler or wheat. Feeding your dog raw meat is a great way to win their heart and give them the protein and other nutrients that they need. This meat should come from a combination of different sources, and include different kinds of organ meat.
I know you are licking your chops already, so I will go deeper. Next we must consider that when a dog makes a kill, that animal has some other good stuff in its stomach, usually vegetable or fruit remnants. This is how wild dogs get most of their fiber and cellulose intake. It stands to reason that we should attempt to mimic this with purred fruit and veggies.
These two components will make up the majority of your giant dogs BARF diet. For other fillers I suggest raw eggs, fish oil caps, yogurt, and of course the raw bones that accompany much of the meat. Bones go a long way to clean your dogs teeth and help clean out their system. They will devour the entire bone and regurgitate the undigestible shards, nice I know but bones are one of the best things for them. Raw bones are digestible, cooked are not, and chicken bones are not suggested.
You can do this diet full time, though I suggest easing into it or you can do it when it is convenient. It tends to be a little more labor intensive and expensive that a regular dry food diet but if you r pets health is worth it go for it. Expect an drastic improvement in coat almost immediately and an increase in muscle tone shortly after.
The BARF diet may sound gross but your great dane will love it.
