The Retro Shower Curtain That Says Peace Love and Flower Power

A tricky style to try to replicate today in home décor is that of the 1960’s.  The items, accessories, floor and wall coverings ranged from silly, funny, and psychedelic to shaggy, fuzzy, and downright ugly.  The trick is to create a 60’s feel that is reflective of that time with today’s design aesthetics firmly in mind.  A bathroom is a good place to try this style and selecting a retro shower curtain can be the decorating focus, especially if the space is small.

Shall we talk color? Remember that particular shade of green known as avocado? It was literally everywhere in the 1960’s, on walls, counters and especially appliances and bathroom fixtures.  Often the subject of jokes and disdain, if the intent is to truly invoke the time period, some touch of this color is a must. Gold, orange, yellow and brown were the most popular accent colors.

Flower power in all its glory and tackiness was a decorating movement, not just a trend. Big daises and other bright flower motifs were not just the choice of hippies and college dormitory dwellers, newly married wives just could not wait to pour over wallpaper samples of the latest pop art flower designs.

While fuzzy throw rugs and egad, even curtains had their fans, thankfully these materials do not translate well into bathroom décor, and thankfully so. However wildly mod plastic shower curtains with flowers popping screams the 60’s as do circles and stripes again on clear plastic liner backgrounds. An authentic touch would be to find some salvaged Formica and use it for the sink surround.

Another thought for a retro shower curtain and theme for a kid’s bathroom is to pick a popular cartoon character from this time. Perennial favorite Charlie Brown and the Peanuts crew immediately come to mind and are still widely available online. Other sixties kids’ favorites include the Flintstones, Hot Wheels and of course, Barbie.
